I have the honour to inform you that
serious difficulties have arisen in the matter of finding
mooring accommodation for the Merchant Steamers using the
portion of the Harbour immediately to the West of the Man-of-
War Anchorage, owing to the increased size of the vessels.
Some of these are now so large that there is only room for
four buoys where five are at present situated, and unless
more room can be found one buoy must be removed. Messrs.Butter-
field and Swire are one of the Fims affected, and if the re-
adjustment of the boundaries of the Man-of-War Anchorage sug-
gested by me in paragraph 6 of my Despatch No. 410 of the 27th.
August last could be effected, the necessary relief for the
present congestion would be found, and some of the Steamers
of that Fimm could he moored opposite the Firm's Go downs.
The steady increase in the Shipping of the
Port and especially the increase in the size of the Steamers
is tending to make the question of moorings an acute one.
